Profitability planning toolkit
Profitability calculators and formulas
Calculate margin, markup, break-even, ROI, project profit, client profit, and retainer economics with transparent formulas. Every calculator works without registration and keeps entered financial values in your browser.
What profitability measures
Profitability is revenue minus the costs included in the decision. Margin divides that profit by revenue; markup divides it by cost. Break-even finds the volume needed to cover fixed and variable costs, while ROI compares an investment gain with the initial investment. Choose the calculator that matches the question, then verify the result against source records.
Price and margin
Move from cost to price, then distinguish margin from markup.

Profitability formula reference
- Profit
- Revenue − included costs. Use revenue and costs from the same scope and period.
- Profit margin
- Profit ÷ revenue × 100. Margin uses revenue as the denominator.
- Markup
- Profit ÷ cost × 100. Markup uses cost as the denominator.
- Break-even units
- Fixed costs ÷ (unit price − variable cost). A positive contribution per unit is required.
- ROI
- Net return ÷ initial investment × 100. Compare time, risk and omitted cash flows as well as the percentage.
Profitability toolkit FAQ
Which profitability calculator should I use?
Use profit margin for revenue and cost, markup for cost-based pricing, selling price for a target margin, break-even for required sales volume, ROI for an investment return, and project, client or retainer calculators when delivery time and direct costs matter.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin divides profit by revenue, while markup divides profit by cost. The same sale therefore produces different margin and markup percentages.
Are these calculators accounting reports?
No. They are planning tools based on the values and scope you enter. Verify material decisions against invoices, payments, expenses, task costs and appropriate professional advice.
Are entered amounts saved?
No. Calculator inputs and results stay in the browser unless you deliberately download or print them. FollowIncome analytics do not include entered financial values or calculated results.
